Israel starts building wall on Lebanon border

theyoungradical:

verbalresistance:

Israeli army begins constructing wall, set to stretch for more than 2km, to “avoid frictions on the border”.

The Lebanese-Israeli border has witnessed sporadic clashes since the 2006 conflict between Israel and Lebanon

The Israeli army has begun building a wall that will run several kilometres along part of its border with Lebanon, a military spokeswoman has said.

“This construction, which began on Monday, is being carried out in co-ordination with UNIFIL (the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon) and the Lebanese army,” she said. “The wall is intended to avoid frictions on the border.”

Israeli public radio said the wall would be several metres high and was intended to protect the Israeli border town of Metulla from fire coming from the Lebanese side. It is expected to take several weeks to build.

It said the wall would be more than 2km long and 10 metres high.

In an interview with Lebanese daily, Al Akhbar, last month, the Lebanese army said that as the wall would be located beyond the border on the Israeli side, [the army] adopted a position of neither accepting nor rejecting the wall, but deeming it to not be of its concern.

Israel’s military announced the project in January, saying it would protect recently-constructed apartment blocks in Metulla from sniper fire coming from the Lebanese border town of Kfar Kila.

Israel and Lebanon are technically at war but military officers from the two sides meet regularly under the auspices of UNIFIL to co-ordinate security along their joint border.

Israel fought a devastating war against Lebanon in 2006, which cost the lives of 1,200 people in Lebanon, mainly civilians, and 160 Israelis, mostly soldiers.

The 53% ploy to divide the 99%

This 53% business is very clever, because it is basically a way to trick people into throwing their lot in with the 1% when their real interests lie with the 99%. Pointing out who pays income taxes and who doesn’t is a way of praying on the frustration—the very understandable frustration—that people feel when they are worked 40+ hours at a job they hate for a boss they hate so they can barely afford nice things that they hardly every get to enjoy and then look around and realize that other people have some of those nice things without having to satisfy a boss they hate and work unreasonable hours at a job they hate. Of course that pisses people off, and we on the left are idiots when we pretend that it doesn’t. Let’s forget for a moment that there are a lot of taxes to pay besides income tax, and the “47%” pay those. Instead, consider the following:b

A) 1% gets rich off this arrangement at the expense of the “53%.” Think about it. When someone buys a flat screen TV with your tax money, where do you think that money is ending up? Huh?

B) The people on the nations welfare role want to change this arrangement, and want to work, whereas the 1% is “conservative” AKA doesn’t want anything to change. Because the welfare state that is oppressing you, 53%er, is also oppressing the people who do not happen to pay income tax.

Today is the anniversary of the beginning of Syria’s revolution. So far eight to nine thousand people have been killed and countless wounded. 230,000 have fled their homes. The opposition has planned rallies to mark the day, although the Syrian army is bolstering its presence in opposition strongholds, making it difficult. Activist Adel El-Omari said: “It is clear that they have tightened the siege because they are worried about what people will do for the anniversary.”

One of the latest pieces of news out of Syria is the revelation of the contents of the Assads’ emails, as obtained by the Guardian. There are several thousand of them, revealing the Assads’ lives of casual luxury, ordering apps off iTunes while their country erupts.

About

This is the official Tumblr for Forecasting Rain

"This blog represents a few voices of the ever-growing coalition in favor of changing this world at its core--a goal that will require a revolution of one kind or another. We are not mainstream in our thoughts, opinions, or allegiances and we do not intend to be—we wish most of all to use this blog as a way to challenge the status quo, the foundation of which is racism, sexism, classism, exploitation, violent oppression, economic and environmental injustice, etc. Our second hope is to motivate others to challenge the dominant narratives that surround us all and, at the same time, commit to being motivated, educated, and challenged by those we engage with.

The people who have been painted as the least among us will be the ones who save us all."
